Barnard brings a documentarian's eye and ear to this Dickens-esque bildungsroman, recording the boys' friendship in an intimate, vérité style.
Los Angeles Times
Dec 26, 2013
Much of the movie is hard to bear, yet it never drags, thanks to the momentum that Barnard finds in the fable, and, above all, to the energy that she unleashes in her young leads.

Though they share the same title, director Clio Barnard's bewitching follow-up to The Arbor bears little cosmetic similarity to the fluorescent idyll of Oscar Wilde's 19th century children's fable.

A social-realist contemporary re-working of Oscar Wilde's children's tale of the same name, this film is unapologetically miserable, gritty, British cinema. And it's brilliant. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/4 -- Clio Barnard's The Selfish Giant isn't the Oscar Wilde children's story, but more an inspired take on it in the kitchen-sink style of a Ken Loach drama. Full Review

[Ms. Barnard] captures the milieu and personalities of her characters with tact and sensitivity.

Rating: B -- "The Selfish Giant" is a story of dependence, damage and desperation, told with grit and grimy frankness. It's also a portrait of friendship born of need and emptiness, on the road to nowhere. Full Review

Product Description:

Two young schoolboys find their close-knit friendship beginning to unravel as they fall under the spell of an unscrupulous scrap-dealer in this bleak drama based on the story by Oscar Wilde. Consummate outsiders both in school and in life, 13-year-old Arbor (Conner Chapman) and his best mate Swifty (Shaun Thomas) find their futures looking uncertain after being expelled from school. Despite their shared setback, both boys remain determined to provide for their families, even if it means performing shady jobs for local scrap-metal merchant Kitten (Sean Gilder). Meanwhile, despite Arbor's desperate attempts to impress and emulate his questionable new mentor, it's Swifty who truly interests the manipulative Kitten. As this sad reality slowly begins to dawn on Arbor, a deep divide opens between the troubled teen and his former best friend, paving the way for a tragedy that will affect the lives of all involved.
