Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 2.5/4 --
While House By the River is, at least, a typically interesting Lang film, it suffers from a weak script and uninspired performances that even the director's moody visuals have trouble saving.

TV Guide
Its 85 minutes stuffed with shadowy menace, odd magical-realisms (what is it with the jumping fish?), and effortless tension, House by the River is quintessential Lang.

Rating: 3/5 --
Making moody use of light and shade, Lang ingeniously involves us more deeply than the plot merits. For all that, it's still very much a B-movie.

Radio Times
House by the River is a gothic melodrama, and it marshals its limited resources to create a rich and pervasive atmosphere of decay and corruption.

Full of Victorian adornments, shadowy lighting and morbid moods, it is a desperate attempt to raise goose-flesh with a standard horror-psychological plot.

Product Description:
Shot on Republic Pictures' poverty row, which afforded director Fritz Lang creative freedom while limiting his budget, this haunting melodrama stars Louis Hayward as Stephen Byrne (DANCE, GIRL, DANCE), a wealthy writer given to bouts of violence and dementia. When his attempts to seduce his wife's maid are rebuffed, he murders her and solicits his brother John's (Lee Bowman) help in disposing of the body in the river. Stephen's wife, Marjorie (Jane Wyatt, BOOMERANG!), is innocent of her husband's activities, while the upstanding John has growing affections for his brother's wife. As the authorities close in, this love triangle moves toward a dramatic face-off by the river's edge.
