Rating: 2.5/4 -- Broken Embraces is certainly moody, and that's one of its charms. But behind the style is disappointing substance, a melodramatic story that's as old as Hollywood. Full Review

3 stars out of 5 -- [T]he film's full of fine performances -- not least Cruz....There's much to enjoy here...

[A] film that serves as a love letter to the movies, and a demonstration of the medium's mysterious power....Mr. Almodovar always loves to play games, thicken textures, keeps us enthralled by keeping us guessing.

Rating: 2.5/4 -- While its self referencing love of cinema is a feast for any cinephile, I can't help but feel that the film ultimately just runs out of gas. Full Review

This melancholy romance is the first Almodovar feature I've ever really liked, an expertly fashioned melodrama that steers mercifully clear of his usual puckishness and star-mongering. Full Review

It's hot-blooded, haunting and totally embraceable.

Rating: 2/4 -- One failing in the film is how boring it is to watch Cruz pretend to be a bad actress. The comic movie within a movie, which borrows from Women on the Verge, isn't funny.

Product Description:

After LIVE FLESH, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, and VOLVER, director Pedro Almodóvar and his muse Penélope Cruz unite for a fourth time with this drama. Here, Almodóvar delves into noir style to tell a tale of a man (BAD EDUCATION’s Lluis Homar) with dual identities who tries to compartmentalize his life after he loses his love (Cruz) and his sight in a car crash.
