Rather than try to establish any tension, Eggers prefers to utilize poor jump scares sporadically between artfully composed shots, all of which amounts to little.

Way Too Indie
Much of what makes Eggers’ script so strong is his use of extensive research into court documents and historical records of witchcraft from the period when the film is set.
Chicago Sun-Times
4 stars out of 5 -- [W]riter-director Robert Eggers’s Sundance prize-winning feature debut is an atmospheric chiller rooted in the fertile soil of religious zealotry, social isolation and original sin.
The Guardian
Rating: 3/5 --
The Witch aims for an engrossing, period appropriate realism that only deepens the psychological burden on the audience.

Cinergética
The Witch is visually resplendent, aurally meticulous, and singularly crafted to evoke dread from opening to close.

Rating: 8.5/10 --
The horror is cumulative, and the escalating, asymmetrical shape of Eggers' story is a nice change of pace for the genre.

Way Too Indie
Product Description:
A devout Puritan family in 1630s New England are exiled from their village, and struggle to survive in their new home situated at the edge of a mysterious forest. The sinister, witching forces in the wilderness emerge silently to terrorize them, first by kidnapping the youngest of their five children. As their life-sustaining crops fail, the clan fall victim to paranoia and fear as they begin to turn on one another, eventually suspecting teenage daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) of witchcraft. With the vast majority of the dialogue culled from primary sources from the time period, Robert Eggers' debut feature THE WITCH is a terrifying glimpse into a family descending into madness.
