First and easily the best version of the story.

The appealing theme of predestination is expressed by [Rain's] Mr. Jordan ... making this one of the few rom-coms expressly for Presbyterians.

Effortlessly charming and endlessly imitated, Here Comes Mr. Jordan is a fantasy comedy with a surprisingly complex take on the afterlife and the nature of fate.

A mildly amusing comedy fantasy that was extremely popular during WWII and later served as the basis for Warren Beatty's 1978 Heaven Can Wait.

[T]he comic fantasy HERE COMES MR. JORDAN positively radiates reassurement, in the form of a beatific and perpetually amused Claude Rains. -- Grade: B+

juggles the tones and genre shifts with an impressive deftness that makes it feel all of a piece even though, in many ways, it is all over the place

There are some nice comic moments peppered throughout, but more interesting than the film itself is its influence on film and TV.

Product Description:
A beguiling fantasy comedy that accompanies a restless spirit from Earth to Heaven and back again. Montgomery has a happy-go-lucky charm as professional boxer Joe Pendleton. When the fighter's plane crashes after a bout, his spirit is removed--too early-- from his body by the inexperienced heavenly messenger (Horton, in one of his best roles). A new body must be found. First, Joe occupies the body of a millionaire about to be murdered in his tub, and later a heavyweight boxer who runs afoul of the Mob. Throughout his celestial journeys, he finds his way to the winsome Keyes and his manager, Gleason. Followed by the 1947 sequel Down to Earth and the the inspiration for 1978's Heaven Can Wait. The laserdisc features a second audio track with commentary by Montgomery's daughter, Elizabeth Montgomery, who discusses the film, her father, and her own career. Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor: Robert Montgomery.
