Somehow a story that otherwise honors the value of a man to his family fails to notice the irony of applauding arrangements that rob little girls of fathers.

"The Meddler" is a humorously poignant look at aging, grief, identity and the need for connection.

Rating: 4/5 --
Sarandon and Byrne are great together, and the gruff J K Simmons relishes a rare romantic part in what is an intelligent and touching exploration of long-term grief.

You gotta love Marnie Minervini, the nosy, needy, New Jersey transplant and title character of THE MEDDLER. That she's played with such instinctual warmth and comic verve by the estimable Susan Sarandon is the icing on a well-baked cake...

Product Description:
After the death of her husband, a woman named Marnie (Susan Sarandon) relocates to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter Lori (Rose Byrne), a Hollywood screenwriter. While Lori frets about her mom's smothering ways, Marnie keeps getting involved in the lives of others: She dates an ex-cop (J.K. Simmons), helps an Apple Store employee study for school, and pays for a lesbian wedding. Lorene Scafaria wrote and directed this comedy-drama, which is based on her relationship with her real-life mom. THE MEDDLER made its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
