The animation and Matthau help to create one of the most underrated specials in the Rankin/Bass catalogue. Full Review

This made-for-TV musical version rarely surfaces these days, and that's a pity, particularly since Rathbone's patented brand of hammy villainy suits the character so well Full Review

A traditionally animated musical special that's surprisingly emotional. Full Review

It's still a superb version of a very good story, with some terrific songs. The special loses something by condensing the story as much as it does, but it's hard to go wrong with Dickens in song. Full Review

Rating: B+ -- The Stingiest Man In Town remains a brisk retelling of one of the most famous stories ever told, a retelling that boasts fun songs, a good deal of TV history being made, and a great central performance. Full Review

Torre and Spielman’s score is delightful, with Torre’s lyrics and book condensing the tale of Scrooge ably in under 90 minutes. -- Grade: B+

Product Description:

Everyone knows the basic premise of Charles Dickens's A CHRISTMAS CAROL - the saga of Ebenezer Scrooge, the meanest and most miserly man on Earth, whose life changes forever when he is visited by three ghosts, late one Christmas Eve. The version of the tale that appears in this home release actually constitutes a musical, with compositions by Fred Spielman and a book and lyrics by Janice Torre. Originally produced for television, it stars Basil Rathbone as Scrooge, as well as Johnny Desmond, Patrice Munsel, and legendary crooner Vic Damone.
