Rating: 4/5 -- Ozon was wise to translate the story into fiction. In their rawness and their sense of intimacy, the family scenes ferret out the emotional truths behind the bald and bitter facts. Full Review

There's a power to By the Grace of God that could have been less overt -- I'm looking at you, Spotlight poster in the background of one scene -- but it by and large sticks the landing. Full Review

It's an admirably sober account of the often painful process for abuse victims of coming forward with testimony after living for 30 years or more with their painful secrets.

Rating: 3/5 -- Mutating into a documentary-style approach, Ozon has a talented cast helping him stabilize the narrative disproportion whenever the film goes up and down in tone. Full Review

Ozon exerts his command of cinematic language throughout, in ways that are less immediately obvious. He crafts a film that is engrossing from the start, while building to something greater and more emotionally encompassing.

Product Description:

Writer-director François Ozon's searing psychological drama is based on the case of Father Bernard Preynat – the man responsible for France's most notorious church sex abuse scandal to date. In present-day Lyon, a married man's memories of being sexually abused when he was a boy scout awakens when he realises that the priest responsible for them continues to work with children. He makes connections with other victims to pressure the church to come to terms with its complicity.
