As in Smith's debut film, Clerks, there's something about the scruffy Chasing Amy that breaks through the pretenses of more conventional movies. Full Review

What's best about Chasing Amy is that it matters in a way Smith's other films don't -- it throbs with real feelings and frustrated inadequacy. Full Review

...The film's great strength is its screenplay, which approaches its actors with moving emotional honesty...

Rating: 2/5 -- A reductive juncture in Smith's career compared to his more situationally-specific and fine-tuned predecessors, Clerks and Mallrats. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Chasing Amy is not yet a mature work Smith still needs a style to go with his sensibility but its yearning for maturity is palpable and touching. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Chasing Amy represents a change in direction for Smith, with drama before gags. A chick flick for blokes. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Even when its young, uncertain characters appear to be in danger of talking (and whining) themselves to death, there's something genuine and charmingly naive about their attempts to make sense of their feelings. Full Review

Product Description:

When handsome young comic book creator Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) meets cute young comic book creator Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), romance seems preordained. But Holden is soon confronted with Alyssa's complex sexual history, as well as his friend and colleague Banky's (Jason Lee) conflicted and enraged response to the affair. Despite the seriousness of the issues, director Kevin Smith keeps the laughs coming, even as Holden goes through hell and grows up.
