Carr has a terrific knack for knowing when to cut, just when your sympathies are veering too far in one direction.

This is all compelling, stomach-churning stuff, but one wishes that Carr dug deeper into the broader implications of the cannibal cop's downfall.

Valle's case has gone to appeal and it may be a long time before it's finally resolved, but Thought Crimes at least ensures that the discussion of its real issues will continue to penetrate the panicked noise.

Nonfics
It's by no means an easy question, and filmmaker Erin Lee Carr presents every side of the debate fairly: It is to her credit that you come away from the film not knowing what to think.

Description by OLDIES.com:
In 2012, Gilberto Valle, a 28-year-old NYC police officer, was labeled "The Cannibal Cop" in the tabloid media after he was charged with conspiracy to kidnap, cook and eat a number of female victims whose information he had gathered through NYPD databases. At trial, Valle's defense team argued that his admittedly intricate and disturbing plans, posted on a fetish website and uncovered by his wife, were nothing more than fantasy, while the prosecution countered that Valle was a disturbed, potentially dangerous predator who had been stopped before committing heinous crimes. The question facing jurors: could Valle be convicted for something he had never acted upon?
