Movie Lovers' Ratings & Reviews:
Based on 208 ratings.
The running verbal by-play between detective/lush Denny and girl friday Farr is a main source of interest in this comedic whodunit with echoes of Nick and Nora Charles. If we didn't know they were assumed to be in love, the insults might be a little hard to take. Lots of red herrings here. When the murderer is finally unmasked, the motivation seems a bit contrived in this stagey mystery. And the actor who plays the lover of the murder victim's widow is no matinee idol! Still, it's worth watching for the fun of it.
For me Reginald Denny will be forever liked to the Bulldog Drummond films so its nice to see him out on his own starring as a detective in his own right.
Comparing this film to the Thin Man is both right on target and completely unfair since this film is more of a genuine mystery than the Thin Man was. Yes The Thin Man is better film, but this one is pretty good in its own right, possessing some really nice twists and turns to make it memorable.
I wish that there had been more films with Denny as this character since he is an able leading man and an excellent detective.
This is a movie to see.
