As a director, Stephen Berra makes this all quite palatable, but as a writer, he frequently mistakes platitudes for profundity.

OC Weekly
While The Good Life is stylistically ambitious and heartfelt, it feels more forced than authentic.
Hollywood Reporter
Rating: 3/5 --
You just can't go from darkly morose to uplifting and hopeful in the last 30 seconds of the film without any kind of arc to take you there.

Cinematical
Rating: 2/5 --
The film spends what seems like interminable hours driving home the brutal truth that the world is better off without Jason Prayer, and, despite the anemic flip-flop of the last twenty seconds, it's hard to disagree.

Film Threat
Rating: B- --
Grounded in the rich cinematic tradition of Small-Town America, the film doesn't break much new thematic ground, but it's well-acted by the entire ensemble, which consists of both pros and young thespians.

Product Description:
A coming-of-age drama about youthful alienation, THE GOOD LIFE stars Mark Webber (BROKEN FLOWERS) as Jason Prayer, an introspective teen marooned in the football-obsessed Midwest. Jason dodges the local players (a popular, hateful bunch) and their God-like coach by staying in with stacks of old movies; the only thing that draws him out is Frances (Zooey Deschanel, THE HAPPENING), a local girl who also marches to her own beat. Following her lead, Jason learns to "be himself," even in hostile circumstances. When it turns out Frances may not be everything she seems, however, Jason begins a frantic scramble to find a place where he can truly belong.
Description by Image Entertainment:
Stars Mark Webber, Zooey Deschanel, Chris Klein, Bill Paxton, Drea De Matteo and Harry Dean Stanton are at their best in this thoughtful, searing portrait of life in the all-American, football-obsessed Midwest. Jason Prayer (Webber) doesn't care about football, but that's just one reason he doesn't fit in. To escape his dead-end existence, he retreats into classic old movies- until he meets the beautiful and mysterious Frances (Deschanel). But when Jason learns that Frances isn't as she appears, he makes some drastic decisions in the explosive climax of this drama about one man's search, against all odds, for The Good Life.
