Description by OLDIES.com:
"The Tune" marks legendary animator and cartoonist Bill Plympton's foray into feature filmmaking, offering a delightfully surreal animated musical comedy. The film follows Del, a struggling songwriter voiced by Daniel Neiden, who is determined to compose a hit tune to salvage his rocky relationship with his girlfriend Didi, voiced by Maureen McElheron, who also co-wrote the script and composed the music.
As Del ventures to meet Didi and his employer, he finds himself ensnared in the whimsically bizarre Alternate Universe of Flooby Nooby, a nostalgic yet twisted rendition of 1950s America. Think David Lynch meets Talking Heads meets classic Warner Bros. cartoons. Here, eccentricities abound, including a singing Doggie Elvis, a love duet between food items, and a joyfully sadistic Bellhop at The Love Sick Hotel.
Plympton's distinctive animation style, executed in colored pencils with a pastel palette, perfectly complements the beautifully off-kilter narrative. "The Tune" is a charmingly warped tale of self-discovery, where Del loses his way only to rediscover his heart amidst the whimsical chaos.
In addition to the film, the bonus features provide a treasure trove for fans. A new restoration of "The Tune" by the Academy Film Archive enhances the viewing experience, while short films like "Your Face" and "Guard Dog" showcase Plympton's unparalleled creativity. A new hour-long video interview with Plympton, McElheron, and Neiden provides insight into the film's creation, and a new commentary track and essay offer further analysis. Plus, a trailer for Plympton's new feature film "Slide" adds to the excitement.
"The Tune" is a testament to Plympton's ingenuity and storytelling prowess, inviting viewers into a world where the absurd reigns supreme, and music serves as the guiding force through life's eccentricities.
