Entertainment Reviews:
A superb, multicultural cast -- headed by Oscar winner Julianne Moore -- brings the fascinating story to life...
Hollywood Reporter
3 stars out of 4 -- [A] rapturous adaptation of the 2001 Ann Patchett novel, which was itself inspired by a real-life hostage crisis that took place in Lima, Peru, during the mid-‘90s.

Rating: 1/5 --
Bel canto literally translates to "beautiful singing", but there's nothing beautiful to be found in the titular film. A woefully written, poorly paced hostage thriller which struggles to hold its faltering note.

Rating: 2/5 --
Even Moore seems quite stranded, given little chance to animate her character except as an unenviable technical exercise.

[A]n unseen Renee Fleming, who lends her gorgeously shaded vocals to the leading lady’s lips, emerges on song.
Variety
Rating: 3.5/5 --
A hybrid of political thriller and earthy drama, this film's tone is so odd that it keeps the audience off balance, which makes it compulsively watchable.
