There's no reason a movie in which Bruce Lee and Steve McQueen (er, "Steve McKee") duke it out with Chinatown gangsters in mid-1960s San Francisco has any business being this joyless and dull.

Overall, while Birth of a Dragon showcases Ng and Yu's talents and great action scenes that are sure to win over martial arts fans, having a Caucasian drive a story about two Asian martial artists just feels like a cinematic cop-out.

The movie’s linchpin is a real-life battle between Lee and a Shaolin monk, Wong Jack Man, which an opening title says was reputed to have been spurred by Wong’s objection to Lee’s 'kung fu for all' ethos.
