...Boyce is appealing....Richard Bradford contributes a highly sympathetic turn...

Rating: 4/4 --
To describe the opening scenes makes them seem routine, and yet they captured my attention with an intensity that I still do not understand.

Chicago Sun-Times
The implacable earnestness laid on by the script, which it took three people to put together, is not relieved by the nonstop songs, from rock-and-roll to Gilbert and Sullivan.

New York Times
A lot of talented people, ranging from Eraserhead's cinematographer (Frederick Elmes) to Choose Me's costume designer (Tracy Tynan), contributed to this muck.

Chicago Reader
A fresh faced Keanu Reeves stars in this quietly tragic depiction of teenage years, suicide and anger.

Good intentions and seriousness aside, it's not much of anything -- not terrible, but not terribly engaging or illuminating either.

Pic is populated by profoundly unrewarding characters doing and saying utterly uninteresting things.

Product Description:
David Sinclair (Alan Boyce) is a healthy, popular high school student. He has a caring girlfriend, a gift for both classical and contemporary music, and a loving family. Then one night, he takes his own life outside the biggest party of the year. The tragedy tears apart David's friends and family--not only are these loved ones bereaved, but they also profoundly puzzled by David's fateful choice. The individual most upset by the tragedy is David's best friend Chris (Keanu Reeves), a troubled near-alcoholic who already leads a reckless life. David's death, some worry, might be the incident that finally pushes Chris over the edge. One of Reeve's first starring roles, PERMANENT RECORD is a sensitive, powerful exploration of teen suicide and the devastating effect it has on those left behind.
