During the United States' Civil War, Union officer Captain Kerry Bradford (Errol Flynn) escapes from a Southern stockade and heads West to stop the shipment of $5,000,000 in gold raised by Southern sympathizers. There, he must overcome Southern patriot Vince Erby (Randolph Scott), outlaw John Murrell (Humphrey Bogart) and the feminine wiles of dance hall singer and Confederate spy Julia Hayne (Miriam Hopkins).
