[Fonda] makes all the right choices, from the mechanics of her walk and her voice inflection to the penetration of the girl's raging psyche. It is a rare performance. Full Review

KLUTE is more of a character study, seemingly about Fonda herself...

Pakula, when he is not indulging in subjective camera, strives to give his film the look of structural geometry, but despite the sharp edges and dramatic spaces and cinema presence out of Citizen Kane, it all suggests a tepid, rather tasteless mush. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/4 -- With Fonda and Sutherland, you have actors who understand and sympathize with their characters, and you have a vehicle worthy of that sort of intelligence. So the fact that the thriller stuff doesn't always work isn't so important. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- While the plot mechanics work along the well-worn gears of any number of mystery-thrillers, the film catches and holds us because Bree is such a fascinating, enigmatic character. Full Review

Product Description:

An intense suspense thriller with a haunting soundtrack, KLUTE is the first part of what director Alan Pakula described as his "paranoid trilogy." This is an appropriate summation of film subjects at the time: Jane Fonda's landmark performance as Bree Daniels was filled with nuances that personified the fears and tensions of urban life.

The story follows rural Pennsylvania private eye John Klute (Donald Sutherland), who is investigating the disappearance of his friend Tom Gruneman. Klute's only lead points him to a Manhattan call girl named Bree Daniels (Fonda), who is being stalked by an obsessed john. Shot on location in New York City, the film is both an intriguing and intelligently adult suspense film and a showcase for Fonda, who won an Academy Award for her role.
