In the end, shiny surfaces are just that--surfaces, with nothing necessarily underneath.

...The film is a successful translation of the basic material from one period and approach to another....It's visually enchanted...
Chicago Sun-Times
...Mr. Cuaron is such a voluptuous visual stylist, this GREAT EXPECTATIONS is capable of wonder...
New York Times
It's a fairly minor film, but quite lovely and successful at creating its own time and place.

Visually stunning retelling has nudity, lots of swearing.

Where the film fails is in its commercial proclivity to centre the narrative trajectory around a fairly asinine updating of the Pip/Estella love-match into a soppy romance.

Charles Dickens' novel has been pared to the bone and set in the present day, and the result is a beautifully shot mess. The characters' motivations could not be any less clear.

Product Description:
A rising artist, flourishing with the help of a benefactor, falls fruitlessly in love with his wealthy childhood playmate, who has grown to be a beautiful coquette. But the nefarious influence of her eccentric, spiteful maiden aunt taints their relationship. A stylish, heavily romantic updating of the eponymous Dickens classic, staged in 1970s south Florida. Bancroft, as the "Miss Havisham" character, steals the show.
