Rating: B --
A good early prison drama with a strong, Oscar-nominated performance of Wallace Beery as a tough murderer; Beery took over after Lon Chaney's sudden death.

Great early prison drama from the ever-inventive George Hill.

It's an outsized, abstracted version of everyday life circa 1930.

The Dissolve
Dialogue cannot carry the mood, the film as a whole is the vehicle. The accusations therefore remain incidents -- passing and unemphatic. Whatever suggestion of social guilt they contain is dissipated by the events of the story, and their treatment.

The New Masses
George W. Hill expertly directed the film and some of the scenes with prisoners en masse are beautifully choreographed. I love how cinematographer Harold Wenstrom plays with light and shadow especially in the earlier part of the movie.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Three thousand men are crammed into cells designed to hold 1800. And with the overcrowding comes the hard-time toughness, the mess-hall ritual, the dark agony of the hole, the cigarettes as currency, the hidden shivs, the hushed voices in the yard, the scheming and the desperation of men with nothing to lose -- all the conventions of prison films to come were set with Hollywood's first major men-behind-bars picture.
