a very strange and maddening movie, being a fascinating tale that's nowhere as provocative as it first promises to be and as the reputations of everyone connected with it might lead you to expect.
New York Times
An unusual love story and a religious film about grace and forgiveness.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Kate Soffel is a warden's wife so full of Christian values that she regularly visits her husband's jail, handing out bibles and attempting to reform the convicts. But Ed Biddle, a rather seductive young man who claims he's been wrongly convicted of murder, leads the repressed Mrs. Soffel into temptation. She decides to help him and his brother escape, and even though it complicates their getaway and puts them at greater risk, Ed persuades Kate to run away with them to Canada.
