TOMATOMETER
We’ve never seen Rex like this before -- and quite a few have probably never seen him at all. Either way, the jolt works to the role’s advantage.
Variety
3 stars out of 4 -- It's often laugh-out loud funny, thanks to Mikey's shamelessness and others' reactions to it.
RogerEbert.com
[A] vivid study of a washed-up porn star, another lo-fi comedy about lives at the margin of US society.
The Guardian
Despite its casual rhythm there is something tight and sad at the heart of Sean Baker’s RED ROCKET.
Sight and Sound
Simon Rex is absolutely electric as Mikey, who scrapes by on his looks and his oily charm and his uncanny ability to get people to give him a second chance.
Chicago Sun-Times
[T]his character study essentially straps you into the passenger seat next to Mikey and launches itself recklessly into orbit. It also extends the filmmaker’s winning streak...
Rolling Stone
[T]he director's singular gift for street casting -- beyond Rex, hardly anyone here has acted professionally before -- and deeply embedded sense of mood works its own kind of slow-rolling alchemy.
Entertainment Weekly
Product Description:
After distancing himself from his small Texan town for nearly two decades, Mikey Saber (Simon Rex) inexplicably returns, much to the surprise of his estranged wife Lexi (Bree Elrod). Yet unbeknownst to his conservative community, Mikey failed to make a name for himself as an adult film actor, his return necessitated by his washed-up career. A chance encounter with the charming Strawberry (Suzanna Son) then forces Mikey to reconsider his self-image and repair the relationships he thought he damaged for good. Sean Baker writes and directs this comedy-drama co-starring Brenda Deiss.
