Product Description:
Al "Jazzbo" Collins was a disc jockey, popular radio personality and was briefly the host of NBC television's Tonight show in 1957. In 1960, he came up with the idea of recording a jazz band doing swinging arrangements of themes from various operas. Music by Verdi, Mozart, Wagner, Leoncavallo, Meyerbeer and Flotow was rearranged for an orchestra assembled by Fred Karlin, with featured solos by a selection of jazz greats including alto saxophonist Phil Woods, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and trombonist Frank Rehak. An all star rhythm section included pianist Hank Jones, bassist Joe Benjamin, vibraphonist Eddie Costa, drummer Jo Jones and guitarist Barry Galbraith. A truly unusual album that transforms classical themes into be-bop bliss. All selections have been newly remastered.
