Basically consists of a wide assortment of character riffs which are offbeat enough to provide moderate moment-to-moment amusement but don't create a great deal of comic impact.

Rating: 1/5 --
Despite the predictability of the story, there might have been moments of mirth had director Malle been able to sustain a narrative. Since viewers don't care a whit for anyone in it, the picture implodes in its own cynicism.

Time Out
Proves that with the right material an intelligent director of demonstrated style and a cast of thoroughly accomplished comic actors can make as painfully witless a comedy as any knucklehead on the block.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Crackers stars Donald Sutherland, Sean Penn and Jack Warden as part of a bunch of crazy, off-the-wall characters who would buy the American Dream...if only they could afford the down payment! Theres Weslake, out of work but never short of hope; Boardwalk, a pimp with a heart of gold and a baby; Ramon, a part-time electrician who specializes in hot wiring cars; Dillard, a permanent resident of outer space; Turtle, a little guy with a big appetite; and Maxine, a diligent meter maid whos on the make. Theyre all customers of Melvin Garveys whose pawn shop holds the answer to their prayers... the gold at the end of the rainbow. With the right direction, they might bungle their way to success... if just one of them knew where they were going!
