As an experiment in steering a potentially tight thriller entirely by one character's irrational whims, it's abrasively compelling, even if the go-go-go plotting doesn't withstand closest scrutiny. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- Plenty of viewers, too, will sympathise with Joseph in a general way: his mental fragility might speak to anyone. Full Review

Even though Whishaw is mesmeric, by the end of the 105-minute running time the whole experience starts to feel like being trapped in a broken-down subway car with a violent mental patient. Full Review

Playing a security worker at London’s Stansted Airport whose simmering mental unease finally comes to a rolling boil one day, Ben Whishaw contributes a scalding performance in SURGE.

Rating: 3/5 -- Whishaw's intensity is gripping to watch but the character remains opaque; whether we're meant to read Joseph as experiencing psychosis or simply suffering the unforgiving conditions of city life under capitalism is ambiguous. Full Review

Joseph's actions don't build to a satisfying ending the way they needed to for this film to work. Full Review
