Save for a few turns that subject the characters to surprisingly harsh disillusionment, there's little in "Sun Children" that doesn't feel predetermined.

Legendary filmmaker Majid Majidi's latest, Sun Children, is a tidal wave of compassion and empathy that crests into rage and sorrow.

SUN CHILDREN is more polished than the director’s early work, and yet, a certain scrappiness remains, shot largely on location, with a mix of experienced but unmannered adults and nonprofessional child actors.
Variety
[A] tidal wave of compassion and empathy that crests into rage and sorrow—all of it provoked by the plight of Iran’s child laborers.

Rating: 3/5 --
While Sun Children's roots derive from The Goonies, there's no pirate ship of gold to save the parents at the end of the tunnel. Maijidi's film begins dire, and ends dire, a plea for his audience to see the world for the dark place it is.

Austin Chronicle

Majidi's latest is another chapter in his plaintive chronicles about the plight of the mostly young and unhoused people from his homeland. Again, he shows us a world viewed through their eyes, and what results is unforgettably sad.
