TOMATOMETER
The result is a riveting drama that at times evokes Spike Lee and Reggie Bythewood’s GET ON THE BUS.
RogerEbert.com
[A] magnificent and moving directorial debut....[The drama] imagines a fascinating discussion about race, religion, power...
USA Today
[T]here is enough authenticity and coherence in the writing and the performances to make the film a credible representation of its moment, and King’s direction makes it more than that.
New York Times
With the help of four intuitive performances, King’s film adaptation briefly removes these titans from their pedestals to tell a meaningful story that is as humane as it is political -- a difficult feat when you’re talking about some of the biggest cultural figures in modern history.
A.V. Club
5 stars out of 5 -- Regina King’s direction allows actors space to do their best work.
Empire
ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI is one of those dramas with a hooky, irresistible meeting-of-the-minds premise that places four legends in a single room, all so that we can sit back and watch the verbal-philosophical fireworks fly.
Variety
3.5 stars out of 5 -- [I]ntriguing and engaging....A stirring and effective mash-up of history real and imagined, with facts carefully reoriented to add heft and imagination to what cannot be known.
Rolling Stone
Product Description:
It is 1964, and Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) has just clinched the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World title. Because of segregation laws, instead of partying in Miami Beach to celebrate his win, he finds himself in the Hampton House Motel with some of his closest friends: Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), and Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.). During their time together, they discuss their roles in the fight for civil rights and the advancement of American society toward racial equality. They emerge determined to change the world around them. Directed by Regina King.
