Rating: 3.5/5 -- Rather than ignore our new neighbors, it's time we take the sweet loaf and jelly mold next door...and listen to what's going on through a different set of eyes. It's films like "Afghan Stories" that will hopefully begin to act as an educational icebreaker

...This is a thoughtful, personal account of a single voyage through a violent region that does not pretend to have the answers or even a political ax to grind....[Mr. Davies] uses his camera more humanely, to look at the effects of the war and to listen to the people affected...

Product Description:

When the United States responded to the September 11th attacks by invading Afghanistan and ousting the ruling Taliban, it was only another year of strife in a land that had undergone two consecutive decades of war and struggle. This documentary by Taran Davies and Walied Osman puts faces on the pain by introducing viewers to members of the Afghanistan population, including a generation who have never known peace but have not lost hope. Interviews with Afghan royal family members who were tortured by the Taliban, aid workers, and peace activists are only some of the proud people of this ravaged nation that is determined to prosper again.

Description by Vanguard International Cinema:

Meet a member of the Afghan royal family once tortured by the Taliban, a refugee couple stuck in no man's land, a revered elder dedicated to peace and his soldier son, an international aid worker, US soldiers and Afghan warlords. Afghan Stories takes us on a daring journey through Afghanistan in the midst of the US invasion with filmmakers Taran Davies and Afghan-American Walied Osman. The film exposes the extraordinary life experiences of ordinary people coping with turmoil as the world comes down on their country once again. The US war on the Taliban is only the latest in the series of 24 years of war and tyranny. But amazingly the new generations, who have never known peace, still have hope and dream of a future lived in prosperity and peace.
