By its appeal to both the imagination and the intellect within a context of action and elemental adventure, in its relevance to the consuming issues of its time...Planet of the Apes is that rare film which will transcend all age and social groupings. Full Review

Planet of the Apes is full of incidental intel- ligences. What it can't pull off is the essential science fiction trick of ,total persuasion. Full Review

Rating: A+ -- Planet of the Apes (1968) is a classic, thought-provoking and engrossing science fiction film that was the loosely-adapted film version of Pierre Boule's 1963 science-fiction novel La Planète Des Singes (Monkey Planet). Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Charlton Heston stars as Taylor, an astronaut who crash-lands on a mysterious world where intelligent apes rule...and hunt primitive, speechless humans for sport. Soon, Taylor's life depends on the kindness of the chimpanzee scientists Cornelius and Zira (Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter) and his escape to the Forbidden Zone, where he uncovers an earth-shattering secret that may hold the key to his own destiny.

Product Description:

Complex sociological themes run through this science-fiction classic, about three astronauts marooned on a futuristic planet where apes rule and humans are slaves. The stunned trio discovers that these highly intellectual simians can both walk upright and talk. They have even established a class system and a political structure. The astronauts suddenly find themselves part of a devalued species, trapped and imprisoned by the apes. But one, Taylor, manages to break out and, aided by a pair of compassionate chimps, makes his escape to an uninhabited section of land. However, during the trek Taylor makes a startling, unsettling discovery about the planet--and realizes he's come full circle. PLANET OF THE APES is based on the novel by Pierre Boulle with a screenplay co-written by Rod Serling.

My God! The Finally Did It! Damn Fools! Movie Lover: from Teaneck, NJ US -- June, 9, 2006

Well, here we are, stuck somewhere on some planet where some Apes (Chimps, Gorillas, and Orangs) rule the day. Very interesting how the Chimps represent the common "folk", the Gorillas the military, and the Orangs the Gov't/Senatorial Wise Leaders! Wonder what planet that was based on?

In any case, Charlton Heston really needed his guns here! (Moses won't cut it for this one!) But the best part is the Twilight Zonish ending - which you can't beat even if the rest of the movie is hokey!

There were several other sequels to this flick that came out almost every year or so but none of them were as good as this one.

I saw this movie for the first time while I was in the US Army in Georgia during 1968. It was quite a movie to see back then, and it was "cool" for its time and age. Still is - if you can get past some of the corny dialogue and also the "ho-hum" ape costumes and makeup (the remake of this movie from circa 2000 did a much better job of the makeup and special effects, if nothing else).

See this movie first and compare it to the 2000 remake - I think you'll agree that nothing beats the original.

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle - gotta go now and have a bannana with my popcorn!

Until the next review,
Paul
