Cary Grant and Irene Dunne are remarkable as a married couple facing the unexpected tragedy of their adopted childs death in Penny Serenade. The 1941 film was ahead of its time in the way it weaved elements of romantic comedy with tragedy, and also for director George Stevens method of moving the story forward by using popular songs of the day. Listen for such numbers as You Were Meant For Me, Just A Memory, My Blue Heaven, and These Foolish Things. Grants performance received an Oscar nomination, while Dunne often cited the film as her personal favorite.
