Rating: A- -- Years after being made, this emotionally mature drama is still poignant and touching. It holds an important place in film history offering what's the first positive image of a gay lead character--that he's Jewish doctor makes it even more significant. Full Review

The script is by Penelope Gilliatt, author and movie critic for the New Yorker... The combination of Schlesinger and Miss Gilliatt obviously worked, his understated approach working with rather than destroying the nuances of her work. Full Review

Product Description:

Directed by John Schlesinger, SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY is a sociologically astute drama about the bisexual love triangle between three characters navigating the changing mores of the early-1970s sexual revolution. Gay doctor Daniel Hirsh (Peter Finch) and divorced working woman Alex Greville (Glenda Jackson) are both involved with the same man--the much younger and rather self-absorbed bisexual sculptor Bob Elkin (Murray Head). Rather than keeping the simultaneous affairs a secret, Bob has chosen to make Daniel and Alex perfectly aware of each other's existence, leading to melancholy ruminations on the shifting nature of love, sex, and relationships in an increasingly fractured British society. Considered groundbreaking for its frank depiction of homosexuality (as well as featuring one of the first onscreen same-sex kisses), the film's nonjudgmental approach to its characters' seething loneliness is shaped by Penelope Gilliatt's intelligent script, Schlesinger's fluid direction, and the disarmingly honest performances of its two leads. SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY deftly straddles the line between character study and social commentary, offering mature drama that is both specific to its era and disconcertingly prescient.
