Born Charles Joseph Parrott in Baltimore, Maryland, Chase began in vaudeville, then went to work for the Christie Film Company, dividing his time between directing comedy, writing gags and tackling juvenile lead roles. He found his greatest celebrity, however, in the comedies of Hal Roach, which made him a true superstar.
