Robert the Bruce is gorgeously filmed by cinematographer John Garrett, making the most of every exquisitely lit crag of the Scottish countryside.

Light on action, but strong performances throughout in this relaxed historical biopic.

There's a big sword battle at the film's climax.

'Robert the Bruce' is an enjoyable sort-of-but-not-exactly spinoff of 'Braveheart.'

It's as if the filmmakers became convinced that without an obligatory cast of faceless moving pieces, it simply wouldn't count as historical fiction.

Unless you are a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, or perhaps part of the Macfayden clan, you're better off letting this particular version of history get lost in the sands of time.

Robert the Bruce places too much emphasis on the secondary characters. The film could have been titled "Morag the Widow Saves Scotland."

Product Description:
Faced with the consequences of his army's consistent failure, Scottish nobleman Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen) flees from conflict to heal his wounds and escape those seeking to turn him in to collect the reward for his capture. Robert finds shelter in the home of a peasant woman (Anna Hutchison), and the two develop a strong friendship as she and the three children in her charge tend to him. The nobleman then learns the true extent of Scottish nationalism, inspiring him to resume the cause for independence. Directed by Richard Gray. Jared Harris and Zach McGowan co-star.
