TOMATOMETER
4 stars out of 5 -- It’s a melodrama about life after wartime, and a portrait of a meticulously recreated Leningrad just starting to lick its wounds. It’s a demonstration of directorial chops...
Rolling Stone

[A story] about the resilience and vulnerability of female friendship, unflinchingly bleak yet told with the most delicate of human touches.

[A] slow, ferocious, and extraordinary second film from blazing 27-year-old Russian talent Kantemir Balagov....You quite often have to remind yourself to breathe.
Variety
May 17, 2019
BEANPOLE establishes without question that Balagov is not one to miss any opportunity to turn the screws ever tighter on his characters, who are besieged on every imaginable front.
Hollywood Reporter
May 16, 2019
BEANPOLE keeps its set pieces muted and interpersonal throughout, revealing the sadomasochistic underpinnings of Iya and Masha’s friendship through dialogue filmed in intimate close-up.

“Beanpole is a war film in the deepest sense since it depicts the devastation wrought by conflict, without a single battle scene.”

[An] astonishing sophomore feature effort of 28-year-old Russian director Kantemir Balagov, who utilizes color as artfully as any painter one can name.

Product Description:

Set in Leningrad, Russia (now known as Saint Petersburg), the worst of World War II is over. The city is in ruins and those that survived are shadows of their former selves. Iya (Viktoria Miroshnichenko) and Masha (Vasilisa Perelygina) are among the lucky few to make it, but surviving in the tatters of this once great city will take grit determination and a hope that disappeared long ago. Directed and co-written by Kantemir Balagov.
