The Last Vermeer is part art-history lesson, part post-war mystery, part family drama, and it all comes together in a fascinating way.

[There] is a compelling framework for this story, but it's done in such strange, large strokes.

By far the most enjoyable aspect of the film is Pearce's overripe performances as van Meegeren, with an assist from Olivia Grant, acidly sensual as the painter's model/mistress.

As it turns out, however, Van Meegeren has a novel defense for his action, which transforms him from pariah to national hero overnight. It’s a remarkable tale...

In retrospect, van Meegeren made for a most unconventional kind of war hero, and all these years later, this trickster artist has finally earned his own portrait.

Product Description:
Director Dan Friedkin's post-WWII drama is an adaptation of art historian Jonathan Lopez's 2008 true-crime biography, "The Man Who Made Vermeers: Unvarnishing the Legend of Master Forger Han van Meegeren." Starring Guy Pearce, Claes Bang, Vicky Krieps, and Roland Møller, it follows a Jewish investigator's attempt to investigate Han van Meegeren: a flamboyant art collector who appears to have sold valuable Dutch artworks to high-ranking Nazi officials. Against all odds, he finds himself fighting to prove Van Meegeren's innocence.
