Rating: 3/5 -- Unlike many Gitmo movies, this one has been sturdily crafted and made, thanks in part to the wealth of detail in Slahi's book, and features little of the eloquently outraged lawyering that usually tempts screenwriters into grandstanding. Full Review

THE MAURITANIAN delivers the shock, outrage and ultimate comeuppance that audiences expect from cynical anti-corruption sagas like RENDITION and THE REPORT.

[S]atisfying...because it reckons with actual recent history, and because we get to watch billboard-size luminaries like Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch do the reckoning.

Rating: 2/5 -- Macdonald and his producers and writers wanted too much... The result? A bland smattering of each that teases us with the possibility of complex roles. Full Review

The Mauritanian is the rare American movie that attempts to indict those responsible for post-9/11 belligerence - it's a cinematic act of atonement. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- Few viewers will find themselves unengaged during The Mauritanian, but there are too many middlebrow beats either side of the jarring chords. Full Review

Product Description:

After the tragic 9/11 terror attacks, Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim) is captured by American authorities on suspicions that he is connected with those events. He is then detained in Guantanamo Bay, where he spends 14 years behind bars without being charged or given a chance to have a trial. Just as he is losing hope, he meets Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster), a defense attorney, and her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley). Together, they start their campaign for justice, no matter how controversial it might be. Directed by Kevin Macdonald.
