4 stars out of 5 -- [E]verything about this comedy-drama pops and snaps. Also zesty are Porumboiu’s nods to classic Hollywood, via references to Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford and even Charles Victor...
The Guardian

Rating: 4/5 -- Porumboiu's goal is more obvious - having fun, with a candy-brightness that fans of his low-key oeuvre may take a moment to adjust to. Full Review

There’s a lot of fun to be had in the simple eccentricity of the premise, which is pulled back from silliness by the cast’s underplaying and Porumboiu’s natural inclination to tamp proceedings back into drollery.
Variety

Rating: A- -- "The Whistlers" is a hugely entertaining gem -- a witty, stylish caper with a breathtaking finale. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Smart, well structured, and slick, The Whistlers is the film you should make someone watch who has said Romanian cinema isn't for them. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Romanian film-maker Corneliu Porumboiu dispenses with the miserabilism associated with his country's cinema in this tart romp about a tangle of double crossings. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/4 -- The effort's worth it, if only for the pleasure of seeing one of the world's finest filmmakers let his hair down and play his justified paranoia for genre thrills. Full Review

Product Description:

Aging police officer and mafia double-agent Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) ventures to Gomera, a remote territory in the Canary Islands, on an assignment to liberate a shady businessman from prison. However, he must first learn a dialect comprised entirely of whistles, used by mafia agents to covertly communicate, in order to be successful on his mission. He also crosses paths with Gilda (Catrinel Marlon), a former one night stand who turns out to be his mission partner. The black comedy is directed by Romanian filmmaker Corneliu Porumboiu.
