But Depp's performance is richer and more coherent than the film itself-a rather laborious narrative that careens through a string of set pieces without transporting us. Full Review

No amount of production design can make up for directorial laziness. This Alice in Wonderland would be better if it were shot in black-and-white on VHS tape with actors in furry mascot costumes. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- The movie is seeped in distinctive visuals, lavish photography and set design that recalls the wondrous texture of "Harry Potter." What, then, held them back on taking further creative opportunities with the story? Full Review

Product Description:

As an unconventional stage adaptation of classic stories by Lewis Carroll, Peter Westergaard's opera Alice in Wonderland distinguishes itself by breaking operatic convention. In Alice, Westergaard dispenses with orchestral accompaniment altogether, instead substituting seven singers, who sing 41 roles and accompany themselves with instruments including drums, bird whistles, hand bells, voices and sound effects. This release features a 2008 production of Westergaard's Alice by the Center for Contemporary Opera, with featured singers including soprano Abigail Fischer, tenor Eric Jordan, countertenor David Kellett and soprano Karen Jolicoeur. Michael Pratt conducts.
