Rating: 4/5 -- It's an important film that should be seen, but it's hardly the flawless masterpiece it's often hailed as. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/4 -- The most elemental and uncluttered of D.W. Griffith's major melodramas. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Definitely a silent drama fighting against the traditional limitations of the form and the strict social mores of the day. One of Lillian Gish's most moving performances. Full Review

Although the picture consumes only 90 minutes, it somehow seems draggy, for the reason that everything other than the scenes with the three principals seems extraneous and tends to clog the progression of the tale. Full Review

Very much on the credit side, though, are stretches of pure Griffith poetry, marvellous use of light and shadow in cameraman Billy Bitzer's evocation of foggy Limehouse, and a truly unforgettable performance from Gish.

Rating: 4.5/5 -- There is so much that is unusually excellent and excellently unusual in Broken Blossoms that one is compelled by enthusiasm to write about it. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Broken Blossoms -- Digitally Remastered D.W. Griffith, one of the most important figures in the history of filmmaking -- and known for the highly controversial The Birth of a Nation -- directed this intimate story of a young girl who befriends a Chinese immigrant in London. Cheng Huan (Richard Barthelmess) leaves his native China to help spread the peaceful message of Buddha to the Western world. He arrives in gritty inner city London and meets Lucy (Lillian Gish), a frail young girl who has escaped from her abusive father. He begins to nurse Lucy back to health but their bond ends in tragedy when word of their unusual friendship spreads. Upon its release in 1919, the film garnered controversy for its -- at the time -- graphic depiction of child abuse. Nevertheless, the simple, delicate story impressed critics and audiences and stood in stark contrast to the larger productions of Griffith's filmography.
