It's easy to like and appreciate The Water Man even if those feelings never truly flow to love.

Lots of family films focus on silly, easy laughs, but this one is like a thoughtful middle-grade novel come to life.

Both Chavis and Miller are extraordinary in what is very difficult terrain, moving from a purely transactional relationship into a deep and caring friendship.

Rating: B+ --
"The Water Man" is a sensitive coming of age story about loss, friendship and the need to believe in magic, and Oyelowo proves himself to be a gifted storyteller with a big imagination.

Product Description:
With his father (David Oyelowo) always critical of his fanciful nature, Gunner (Lonnie Chavis) turns to his kind-hearted mother (Rosario Dawson) for support. However, when his mother's health declines in the face of a terminal illness, Gunner strives to reconcile with his father while seeking alternative healing methods. It is in his science fiction books that Gunner encounters tales of the Water Man, and with the help of his feisty friend Jo (Amiah Miller), Gunner embarks on a mission to an unusual forest to seek the Water Man's help. Directed by first-time filmmaker David Oyelowo.
