Rating: 2.5/4 -- The characters are wonderfully well played by Nick Nolte Sissy Spacek and John Heard -- they have scenes together in which the round-robin of everyday dialogue is almost poetic -- but nobody has given their characters anything to do except to be. Full Review

Heart Beat, which is supposedly about Jack Kerouac and his friends in the Beat Generation, is Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice without Alice and without humor. Full Review

John Byrum has achieved an honest film, narrated with the sobriety of the testimony, just as its characters deserved. [Full Review in Spanish] Full Review

The part gives Spacek little to do and her "acting" is a series of poses in 50's dresses and hairdos. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Postwar America was a time of status quo, a conventional era at which three unconventional people thumbed their noses, lives foreshadowing the social and sexual upheavals of the 1960s: Jack Kerouac. Carolyn Cassady. And Neal Cassady, the free spirit who became the heroic model for Kerouac's landmark novel On the Road.

Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek and John Heard star in writer/director John Byrum's atmospheric portrait of the trio that marched to the sound of the Beat Generation before it was labeled by the media. In bringing to heartfelt big-screen life this poignant three-way love affair, each star gives an impressively revealing performance. All roads in mainstream America once led to tract homes just like those in Heart Beat. But Jack, Carolyn and Neal threw that road map away.

Product Description:

The "Beat" in the title refers to the 'beat' poets of the 1950s, in this story of the relationship between Jack Kerouac and Neal and Carolyn Cassady. Nick Nolte, Sissy Spacek and John Heard star in a tale of redefining relationships during the cultural shift from the staid 50s to the experimental 60s.
Directed by John Byrum (1984's THE RAZOR'S EDGE) and written by Carolyn Cassady.
